The Meridian Fire skirted along lands and roads within the Mason Tract, however the Chapel was NOT impacted by the fire.

Staff will continue to monitor the fire area and work throughout the week rehabilitating the fire control lines on the public land.  To assist with the rehabilitation efforts, please stay on designated roads and trails.

The Village of Roscommon and area businesses are planning a fundraiser for individuals impacted by the fire.  For additional information on this event, you may contact the Higgins Lake-Roscommon Chamber of Commerce at 989-275-8760.

Fire History:

The fire was first spotted by a DNRE fixed wing aircraft at approximately 1:30 p.m. May 18.

The point of origin has been determined and is being investigated. The cause was burning of brush. Burn permits were being issued for this county on May 18.

The fire is on state and federal forest land that is mostly Jackpine, but it had entered a swampy area and a hardwoods area, which helped slow the fire’s progress considerably.
