Over the last few years two surveys have been completed with regards to the safe operation of the Grayling Army Airfield.  One survey was conducted by the Michigan Department of Transportation using standards that have been adopted by the Federal Aviation Administration while another survey was conducted by the Department of Defense using the adopted standards of that agency.

The end result was an identification of 50+ "vertical hazards" located off the ends of three of the four runways.  In many cases, vertical hazards are trees, but not always.  It is incumbent on Crawford County and the Michigan National Guard to ensure the airport is safe for all traffic that utilizes the facility.  Part of that responsibility will be to locate and remove hazards that have been identified as being unsafe to air traffic attempting to use the Grayling Army Airfield.

The Department of Defense and Crawford County look forward to working with the surrounding property owners to insure the safety of everyone that uses that facility.
